Telefónica through Wayra, its prominent innovation program; SportBoost, the sports startup accelerator founded by Iker Casillas; and Gasol16 Ventures, the investment and consultancy platform of Pau Gasol, have joined forces to promote entrepreneurship in the areas of sport, health, and well-being in Latin America.

The consistent growth in the health and wellness sector has led to the formation of this alliance known as GameChangers3. This collaboration aims to empower the industry, addressing society’s growing interest in their well-being and health, with a joint investment of up to € $1 million in innovative startups ready to disrupt the sport-tech industry. These emerging companies should specialize in health, well-being, sport, and global-scale nutrition.

A High-Level Alliance

Wayra commits to strengthening startups through various Telefónica business units. It will organize in-person and online events to enhance networking and facilitate access to Wayra’s investment ecosystem. Moreover, it will provide workspace in its seven hubs spread across Europe and Latin America, thus aiding in the internationalization of the selected companies.

Both entities, SportBoost and Gasol16 Ventures, will provide startups with access to contacts in the sports world and facilitate interaction with sports entities, clubs, and institutions. They will also offer personalized advice and opportunities to scale to the North American market, where both have a significant presence.

Chema Alonso, Chief Digital Officer of Telefónica, emphasized the importance of collaboration, mentioning that artificial intelligence and immersive technologies are vital for sector development. Iker Casillas from SportBoost expressed confidence in the alliance, aiming to drive innovative solutions in the sports realm. Pau Gasol, from Gasol16 Ventures, highlighted the significance of teamwork and his excitement to collaborate in finding solutions that enhance people’s lives.

The alliance was unveiled at Wayra Madrid’s headquarters, with an introduction by its director, Paloma Castellano. This was followed by a debate on the three pillars of the agreement: sport, health, and well-being, moderated by Andrés Saborido, Wayra’s global director, with participation from Chema Alonso, Pau Gasol, and Iker Casillas.

Startups leveraging technologies in sports, health, and nutrition are invited to submit their proposals on Gamechangers3, starting today with a deadline of one year.
