Contxto – Vela Software—which belongs to Canadian Constellation Software—is buying its way into the legal market of Brazil. Last Tuesday (7) it was announced that it acquired Kurier, a legal startup from Recife.
Nonetheless, the price on this acquisition was not disclosed. Vela intends to allow Kurier to continue operating independently.
Kurier and its killer legal tech
It’s likely Vela Software was dazzled by the startup’s growth. Kurier reports it’s been growing an average of 20 percent a year for the last five years.
And rightly so, the startup has developed an impressive toolbox to help the lawyers and paralegals of Brazil. For example, there’s its specialized workflow system so staff can better track their cases and responsibilities.

Kurier also offers a data analytics platform so legal firms can monitor all the happenings going on within the Brazilian justice system. Knowledge is power, so Kurier intends to arm lawyers with as much knowledge so they can strategize accordingly.
Constellation buys and buys in Brazil
This isn’t the first time Constellation acquires a Brazilian startup in the legal business.
In April of last year, it bought Aurum, a legal software developer. And now Kurier will work in a complimentary alongside it.
No doubt the Canadian giant wants to make its way into the Brazilian market through these acquisitions. And based on commentary from Paulo Felipe Martins on behalf of Vela Software, there may be more purchases in the future.
“Kurier was the second step,” said Martins. “But we still have many promising opportunities in this segment of Brazil.”
Plus, considering the large number of lawyers and cases in that country, tech tools can really add a lot of efficiency to operations. So it wouldn’t be surprising if Vela made additional acquisitions in startups or software businesses that tender to lawyers.
