Contxto – Healthy food has a bad rep. Often perceived as “expensive” or “boring,” it’s hard to compare a salad with a hot slice of pizza. Moreover, unhealthy options tend to be in abundance.

To tackle this problem, Colombian startup Foody lets users choose from a menu of healthy meals then request them through its platform. The nutritionist-approved meal is prepped and then delivered to the consumer before lunchtime.

Although its services are only available in Bogotá, Foody plans to expand into Medellín as well as Mexico soon. But to feed this hunger for growth, the startup is currently raising an equity round in the US$2 million to US$4 million ballpark.

Speaking of healthy lifestyles…

The pandemic we really need to talk about

There’s another global illness that needs to be addressed with just as much care as Covid-19: obesity.

According to Statista, in 2018 more than half of the population in Latin America experienced problems with their weight. Overweight and obesity rates in Latam countries stack up as follows:

  1. Mexico: 64 percent
  2. Chile and Argentina: 63 percent
  3. Costa Rica: 59 percent
  4. Peru: 56 percent
  5. Colombia: 55 percent
  6. Dominican Republic: 54 percent
  7. Brazil: 54 percent

We’re all well-aware of how weight-related issues can lead to other problems like diabetes and high blood pressure. Not to mention they increase the risk of heart disease and cancer.

One can only hope that Covid-19 serves as a wake-up call for individuals to assume a more healthy lifestyle. Because until researchers come up with a vaccine or cure that tenders to obesity, it’s up to each person to make the right choice.
