Contxto – For the sake of local app development, Chinese tech enterprise Huawei plans to invest US$50 million in Latin American talent. Showcasing its global acceleration scheme, this plan entails installing eight international labs, one of which will be in Mexico.

Following trade conflict with the United States, the prominent Asian group lost access to Google’s Play Store and Android updates. Moving forward, the goal is to premier this regional fund in 2020, specifically to build a higher capacity for developers. This way, they can produce new apps for the Chinese multinational company.

“US$1 billion are being directed to this acceleration plan, of which US$50 million are being allocated to Latin America and will arrive in 2020 in the region, only for developers,” said Carlos Morales, Huawei Mexico’s PR Manager.

“The first step will be to build the digiexlab that aims to offer the infrastructure for people to attend courses, develop, and grow.”

This past September, Huawei announced that it was going to allocate over US$1 billion in an international developer program. Over the next five years, this effort hopes to strengthen the regional ecosystem.

Based on this arrangement, developers will receive the tools they need to produce new software and hardware for Huawei operations. One of these facilities will be based in Mexico due to its market appeal for Huawei.

“There’s already one in the United Arab Emirates, and the other will be in Mexico because it’s one of the most important countries for the brand,” added Morales. “In fact, I would go as far as to say that it’s in the company’s top five, and that’s why we’re paying attention to the country.”

Huawei in Latin America

When it comes to tech involvement in Latin America, Huawei has its hands in many pots, so to speak. Back in May, the Chinese powerhouse began deploying 5G networks in Peru

At the time, this development came after Microsoft, Google, Qualcomm, Panasonic, as well as Intel cut ties with Huawei for alleged security reasons. Similar internet infrastructure projects were also taking place in Chile
