This round, lead by Sequoia Capital among others, is expected to close within the next two weeks. The capital will bolster xAI’s position in the competitive landscape of technology firms that develop human-like AI for writing, conversation, and art creation, a field that includes rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Founded in early 2023, xAI introduced its chatbot Grok to X platform’s premium users by December. Currently, the company is advancing Grok by training it on 20,000 Nvidia H100s, with ambitions to expand to 100,000 GPUs for future iterations. This funding round is pivotal for xAI as it aims to deepen its technological capabilities and market reach.

In addition to Sequoia, previous backers of Musk’s ventures, such as Valor Equity Partners and Vy Capital, might be involved, though details of all participants in this round are not yet disclosed. This round is crucial as it demonstrates the confidence investors have in Musk’s vision for AI, despite the competitive and rapidly evolving AI landscape.
