Sutskever, known for his pivotal role and involvement in a failed coup against CEO Sam Altman, announced his departure on May 15.
Altman expressed his sadness, praising Sutskever’s contributions and announcing Jakub Pachocki as the new chief scientist.
Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s director of research, will now lead as chief scientist. Pachocki has spearheaded the development of GPT-4, OpenAI Five, and key research in reinforcement learning and deep learning optimization. His leadership is expected to drive rapid, safe progress toward OpenAI’s mission.
Jan Leike, head of the Superalignment team, also resigned. John Schulman, another co-founder, will assume Leike’s responsibilities.
Sutskever hinted at a new personal project, leaving questions about internal dynamics at OpenAI following Altman’s temporary ouster last year.
