Contxto – When it comes to aquaculture, aquatic farmers need to be very careful or else risk their production levels. So to help them and their fishy friends, Cisco, through its Global Problem Solver Challenge recently awarded Preemar with US$10,000.

The Mexican startup was the only company from Latin America to stand in the winners’ lineup for this international competition for startups generating a social impact.

Mexico’s Preemar helps aquaculture prepare

Remember when you were a kid and you had a pet goldfish? Taking care of it wasn’t exactly easy.

Besides feeding it, you had to keep the tank clean and at an appropriate temperature—or else risk sending him off to the great toilet bowl in the sky—. Now imagine that experience at a large scale with fish farms.

In aquaculture, the water’s salinity, temperature, pH, and oxygen levels can all make a difference. And Preemar is giving farmers a tool to help them oversee these factors.

Through its “Pro-viden” system, a floating device is placed into the water where its sensors can soak in all that valuable data. It then forwards these findings to its web platform and app for farmers to see and act upon.

Seafood from Mexico anyone?

Latin America needs very productive fish farms. A report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), showed that while it is one of the regions with the lowest per capita consumption (9.8 kg of seafood per year), it’s also an important exporter and aquaculture producer.

This is problematic as it’s also expected that consumption will rise 33 percent by 2030.

Meaning, Latam economies need higher levels of production to feed exports. All the while Latam bellies need higher levels of production to stay full.

When production must increase, companies and farmers can call in the calvary: technology.
